The Art of Letting Go to Grow
Being made in the image and likeness of God does not mean you are designed to carry all the burdens of the world. The art of letting go to grow requires you to acknowledge God’s power and your limitations. It means submitting your life to God alone.
What Does it Mean to Let Go?
When normal humans let go, they free themselves from negative emotions caused by the past. They may find healthier ways to cope with their experiences or have no alternative strategies at all.
But when a follower of Christ lets go to grow, they submit fully to Him. They surrender their pain, grief, and anger to God and trust that His plans are better.
When we learn how to let go and let God, we are opening ourselves to Him. We acknowledge that He is in complete control of our situation, regardless of how scary or painful it is.
How to Let Go and Let God
Let Go of Your Doubts
“Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.” -Mark 11:23
Our faith is never perfect because we are only humans. We may doubt ourselves, our salvation, and God’s love for us. But the key to letting go of your doubts is to always expect mystery in God.
God always reveals enough to us, nothing more and nothing less. The “secrets” you wish to learn are His alone. The best we can do is live according to the faith we have. Do not let your minuscule doubt make you live like a non-believer.
Let Go of Your Entitlement
“Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:12
In this verse, Paul reminds the people about Jesus’ authority to command everyone to work. He urges us to let go of our dependence on salvation, as it leads to pride, entitlement, and laziness. Instead, his wish is for everyone to diligently work.
But it goes without saying that your diligent work should also not give you a sense of entitlement. Do not assume that your ambitions are bigger than God’s plan for you. In the end, it is still God who gives you the capacity to achieve these things.
Confessing your sense of entitlement will help you live a life of humility. He will cleanse you from all the worldliness and unrighteousness
Let Go of Your Worry
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” – Romans 8:38-39
Do not be like a hamster running on a wheel of worries. The quicker you run, the more tired you get. Yet you remain in the same position.
Stepping off the wheel means recognizing God as the problem-solver. He has the ability to take care of your spiritual, physical, and financial needs. Tell Him, “Lord, take my problems. You have the tools and answers to all my questions and worries. I trust you, Lord.”
Practicing the Art of Letting Go
These small acts will help you learn how to let go of your doubts, entitlement, and worry.
Encourage Yourself
Remind yourself about the life that God wants you to live. It is a life full of kindness, positivity, and love. Encouraging and loving yourself are the most crucial things you can do with the life that God has given you.
Read the Bible
The Bible is full of stories and verses that talk about the importance of letting go. The Scripture offers wisdom to free ourselves from guilt and shame and strengthen our spiritual life. For instance, 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to “cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us.”
Always Pray
Start and end every day by praying. Communicating with God will help you easily surrender yourself because it is through prayer that you recognize God’s love. A simple apology, worship, gratitude, or wish is already an act of letting go.
