How God’s Word Leads To Joy in Our Lives

Throughout scripture we are instructed to study the word of God – not “read” but “study (2 Timothy 2:15).” There is a difference.

When you study the word you ingest it, ponder it, explore it, and delve into the true depth and meaning that it contains. But another benefit of studying God’s word is that He begins to write it on your heart. It is no longer just something you memorize, but something you live.

This is the root of joy. When He lives in us through His word and our obedience to Him, joy springs up.

Here’s how it happens.

We learn how to praise Him more fully.

The Psalms have some beautiful scripture on praise that we can use as a model for our own praise. Scripture tells us to praise Him. In fact, the prayer template that Jesus gave His disciples in Matthew 6:9-13 begins with praise.

After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Matthew 6:9

Praise ushers in the presence of God so it is vital that we learn how to praise Him effectively for where God is, darkness must flee. Praise combats grief, sadness, depression, and so much more. When you open your mouth and begin to praise Him, even if you are just reading scripture aloud, you have an impact on the atmosphere around you and joy follows.

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

Our understanding of the nature of God is increased.

The more you study, the more God’s word sinks into your mind and your heart. When this happens His nature emerges and we have a deeper, clearer understanding of who and what He is. And when you come to understand just how much He loves you, how much He cares for you, and all that He does for you, joy just naturally comes.

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5

Makes our prayers more impactful.

Praying God’s word back to Him is powerful. Remind Him of His promises and blessings for your life that are found throughout His word. When your prayers have more impact, they are more fruitful. When your prayers are fruitful you draw Him closer to you. The closer He is to you, the more joy you have within you.

Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified. Isaiah 43:26

Provides us with guidance for living a holy life.

We see over and over in scripture that we are called to be holy for God is holy. But His word also tells us how to be holy. It is all right there if you study it out. And the holier you become, the more like Him you become – and you’ll be less like the world so those worldly cares won’t get to you so much.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Deepens our relationship with God.

The word promises that when you keep God close to you and walk with Him you will have joy unspeakable. The closer you are to Him, the more joy you will have, regardless of the circumstances. Even when the storms are all around you when you keep God close to you, joy will be there and He will be your shelter.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24

Carve out time in your day to pray and read God’s word. Whether that means getting up a little earlier in the morning or creating a no devices family time each evening, you need to make it happen. It is imperative to your soul – and the joyful life you are promised when you give it all to God.
