5 Signs You’re Engaging in Self-Sabotaging Behavior & How God's Word Can Help

5 Signs You’re Engaging in Self-Sabotaging Behavior & How God’s Word Can Help

Fear, self-criticism, and procrastination can hinder your success, relationships, and self-esteem. These unhealthy habits also keep us farther from God. Learn these five signs of self-sabotaging and how you can combat them through God’s Word.

Being Stuck in Fear

Have you ever felt like the feeling of dread is paralyzing you? Sometimes, we get so worried and scared about the future that we forget to praise God for the present.

What the Bible Says

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. – Psalm 23:4

How to Stop

Overcoming fear as a Christian requires you to integrate your faith and spirituality into your present and future life. It can be as simple as staying still in this fast-paced world and making space for His voice. You can also stop being afraid once you seek community with fellow believers.

Self-Criticism

Your inner voice could be relentless or rude at times. For example, you might feel like you won’t pass your exam even if you know you’ve done your best.

What the Bible Says

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. – Galatians 6:1

How to Stop

Self-criticism is usually caused by being stuck in the past. Rising from failures and disappointments will help you stop criticizing yourself. You must also remember that you are made in the image and likeness of God. Whatever insult you tell yourself is an insult to God.

Neglecting Your Health

Neglecting is a clear sign of self-sabotaging behavior. Some like losing sleep over terrible thoughts, while others refuse to eat healthy meals.

What the Bible Says

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. – 3 John 1:2

How to Stop

Although becoming ill does not mean that we don’t trust God, living a healthy lifestyle is a way of glorifying God. Aside from eating healthy, exercising, and having enough sleep, we can stay nutritious by obeying the Word of God. These small practices will turn into habits allowing you to serve the Lord better.

Comparing Yourself to Others

It’s normal to compare oneself to others because human beings are social creatures. For instance, you might see another person and think, “I wish I were as beautiful as her.”

However, this action becomes self-sabotaging when we think that others’ victories are our losses. We unnecessarily hurt ourselves when we see their best moments and only highlight our difficulties.

What the Bible Says

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2

How to Stop

Instead of coveting other people’s circumstances, try being happy for them. Appreciate what others received from God, and make sure to recognize what you have received as well.

Instead of comparing yourself to others and their worldly possessions, why not compare yourself to Christ? This will help you develop a correct sense of self filled with humility, love, and holiness.

Procrastination

Whether you’re trying to avoid homework or put off tasks, procrastination can significantly affect your job and entire life.

Procrastination is one of the worst ways you could sabotage yourself. No matter how inspired and well-organized you are, a lack of discipline and value for the time God has given you will not make you successful.

What the Bible Says

And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, “Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.” – Acts 24:25

How to Stop

It’s possible to end procrastination if we seek God’s spiritual power. Ask Him to allow you to rise above your human limitations and weaknesses. Remember not to put off the blessings He provides.
