11 Steps to Becoming a Self-Aware Christian

11 Steps to Becoming a Self-Aware Christian

Self-awareness is one’s capacity to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and personality. It is different from self-absorption or egoism. Being self-aware benefits our relationship with ourselves, others, and God. So how do I become fully self-aware? Here are 11 tips that will help you become a self-aware Christian.

Step 1: Listen to Feedback Without Justifying

Soliciting feedback from your loved ones is a form of humility since you’re acknowledging your imperfection as a Christian. But do not justify your actions when you ask for their suggestions. Instead, listen intently and follow them.

Listening without defending yourself will help you hear what you need to learn about yourself and use the information to improve yourself. It also increases your trust in other people.

Step 2: Reflect

We can emulate Jesus’ self-awareness by doing self-reflection. We remember that Jesus knows He can do what the Father does. He also knows that He is a king and our savior. But He never made himself feel mightier than others.

Think about your achievements and ask yourself, how am I doing? Am I living life according to God’s commands? Am I Christlike in my words and actions?

Step 3: Connect With Yourself

Aside from connecting with your loved ones through faith, you should also connect with yourself. Notice your feelings and accept your thoughts. While it may seem passive, accepting your emotions will help you become more self-aware and grounded in the world.

Connecting with yourself also means enjoying solo activities in the name of God. Ride your bicycle and explore God’s creations. Pet your dog. You can even create art to express your God-given talent.

Step 4: Keep an Open Mind

Overcome spiritual indifference by keeping an open mind. While you can acknowledge your thoughts, emotions, and feelings, you should also stop limiting yourself to them. It’s time to overcome your apathy and start being curious about yourself and the world around you. This will show that you are an excellent, self-aware member of the Christian community.

Step 5: Be Open to Change

Self-awareness requires you to be curious, interested, and excited about improving yourself. Despite its discomfort, being open to change will help you better know yourself.

Christian teachings tell us that we must change our identity before changing our actions, not the other way around. Once we are sanctified, we can choose to change who will influence our lives and how we will be better.

Step 6: Journal

Reflecting and connecting with oneself can be challenging for some people if they don’t write everything down. Keeping a journal will boost your self-awareness and clarity. Grab a notebook and pencil, then start jotting down your thoughts, experiences, and emotions. This will help you monitor your behaviors and spirituality.

You can also buy a Christian journal. These products contain journaling prompts that may initiate your reflection and prayer.

Step 7: Have Wisdom

Wisdom is our ability to understand life according to God. Like Solomon, we sometimes think that being wise is challenging. But the Scripture provides tutorials on how to have wisdom. Ask God to instill knowledge in you so you may recognize yourself even more.

Step 8: Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Self-aware people understand their strengths and weaknesses and know how to improve themselves. They also know that God uses our weaknesses to build more strength. This is called the paradoxical spiritual power of weakness, which you can read in 2 Corinthians 12.

Step 9: Be Aware of Fellow Christians

Knowing fellow Christians will give you insights about yourself, too. As the saying goes, you are who you surround yourself with. Having people around you will also enhance your self-appreciation and appreciate the unique environment you have.

Step 10: Meditate

Remove any outside noise and spend some alone time with God. Let the silence help you listen to His message, then allow His message to give you a better understanding of your current situation, thoughts, and emotions. Time away from others will help you recall God’s plan for your life and realign your focus.

Step 11: Read Books

Another way to be more aware of yourself is by reading Christian books. You can also listen to Christian podcasts if you’re an auditory learner. Learn about other Christians’ reflections on the Word of God and how they see God’s faithful character.
