This past August we had the honor of presenting our very first scholarship to recipient David Solis. The goal of the #GoServe leadership scholarship is to provide financial aid for students that are servant leaders across the globe. The only requirements are:
You must be a current college student or prospective college student (currently applying).
- You must serve locally, nationally, or globally.
To celebrate our first recipient, we got to know more about his life and his experience on his missions trip.
Some background on David:
Before becoming a student at Bryan College, David graduated from Columbine High School. He greatly appreciates his parents for shaping him into the person he is today. His parents have been shaping his spirituality from a young age, as well as building his up emotional and mental strength.
When initially deciding on a college, David’s eyes were set on the Air Force Academy. In the end, things were falling into place with Bryan College. David felt reaffirmed that Bryan College was where God was calling him, so he enrolled there. His plans are to study Criminal Justice and eventually become a lawyer.
David’s Mission Trip was Life Changing
We found it most impressive that David’s family has a 20 year tradition of attending missions trips in Mérida, in the Yucatán state of Mexico. His brother in law is the youth pastor of the South Fellowship youth group. David’s father was originally supposed to attend the missions trip, but wasn’t able to because of his cancer diagnosis. However, David still felt called to serve and attend the missions trip. On the trip, David built memories that will last him a lifetime. He says, “My most memorable thing I will take from the trip is the relationships I’ve acquired from sharing one thing in common: the love for God.”
David plans to continue the work of the Lord through future missions trips to Mérida.
Advice to Those Thinking About Attending A Missions Trip
David’s advice to people who are deciding whether or not to attend a missions trip is:
Go with a humble heart and open mind. Even when it means sleeping in no air conditioning, try not to complain about any of the conditions thrown your way.
