I have always had a sense of adventure. Taking trips and embarking on major vacations excites me to the bone. I dream of visiting different places around the world and learning along the way. When I travel, I always make it a point to cross off some of the churches on my bucket list.
On my vacations I like to include finding a church where I can attend their mass service. There are countless of places of faith to discover that are both architecturally beautiful and hold an abundance of history. Ultimately, I have been dreaming of going on a pilgrimage or follow the trail of Jesus’ life.
Here are a few churches that are on my bucket list of places to travel to:
- Church of Nativity (Bethlehem): Noted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the church that stands over the cave that marked the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem survives up to this day. A part of the pilgrimage route, the Church of Nativity has survived earthquakes, rebellions and other natural and man-made calamities. Ultimately, this location’s key factor is that it marks the beginning of the greatest story the New Testament has ever told.
- St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican City): Home of the papal enclave, St. Peter’s Basilica boasts not only rich religious history but also breathtaking architecture throughout its every inch. Replacing the old St. Peter’s Basilica from the 4th century AD, the construction of the current basilica began in 1506 and was later completed in 1626. Today, it still stands strong and still a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists.
- Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey): If history draws your interest, this museum will surely catch your attention. Also known as the Church of Holy Wisdom, this Byzantine structure began as a Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal basilica then as an imperial mosque before it ultimately stands now as a museum. This rich destination may not have retained its original structure, its current state remains to be one of the greatest buildings in the world.
They say adventure is the best way to learn. While we do, it’s nice to remind ourselves that in every adventure we take, God is with us. To make fulfilling vacations, take Him in every step of the way! Here’s to more soulful adventures!
