Finding Direction in Life When You Feel LostBack in the old days when people were lost they had to stop and ask for directions.  Now, with smart phones and GPS we can be lost by ourselves.  With just the touch of a phone screen we can find our way back to the road we need to be on.  If only life were that easy!
I often feel lost and unsure.  Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing?  Is this what God wants me to be doing?  And I admit, I’m not the kind of person that likes to stop and ask others for directions.  I don’t want other people to know that I don’t know if the path I’m on is the right one.  My pride can leave me not only feeling lost, but feeling alone.  If only I had the proper directions to keep my life running smoothly!

When I am feeling lost, here are some things I do to help me get back on track.

  1. Reflection & prayer.  If I don’t stop when I’m lost, I’ll keep going down the wrong path.  Instead of continuing on a path of uncertainty, I stop.  I find a quiet time in the day to reflect on the things that are making me feel unstable.  When I identify those things I pray about them.  I pray that I can view them from a different perspective or see my life with more clarity.  A renewed mind allows God to take over my thoughts.
  2. A conversation with a trusted friend.  True friends can speak honesty in our lives.  God uses relationships to help communicate to us when we can’t wrap our minds around things.  It can be hard to pick up the phone and tell someone about your deepest struggles, but it is always worth it.  The conversation helps strengthen your friendships, your relationship with God, and always leaves you with more perspective than you start with.
  3. Evaluating my gifts.  I always feel better when I am using my gifts.  Each and every one of us has strengths and passions that are given to us by God.  When we’re not using them, that’s when we feel lost.  How can I use the gifts I was giving to help serve others and serve God?  The answer to this question will always help me get back where I need to be.
  4. Find the open doors.  Following opportunities can be tricky.  Usually accepting an opportunity means we have to close the door to another path in our lives.  This makes it hard to leave one path and join another.  Opportunities may bring challenges, but challenges bring possibilities of personal growth and development.  When we’re growing as people through Jesus Christ, we are on the right track.

For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction. Psalm 1:6

Most importantly, when I feel lost I check to see if my heart is on track.  Is my heart aligned with the will of the Lord?  He promises us that he will watch over us if our intentions and our hearts are pure.  If my heart and my thoughts are focused on carrying out God’s will, I am reassured that he is watching over my life.  If He is watching over my life I know I don’t have to feel lost or alone anymore.

Prayer for today:

Dear God, There are times when I feel like I am lost in this world.  I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing and I feel like I am walking alone.  When I feel this way, help me check my heart and allow me to have truthful conversations that will lead me back to You.  Allow me to see the opportunities ahead clearly, and direct my heart to the path that You want it to be on.  Amen.
